Prophet Muhammad - 3: A child in difficult circumstances

Prophet Muhammad - 3: A child in difficult circumstances

By ADIL SALAHI | ARAB NEWS

Special circumstances surrounded childhood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and these undoubtedly had a bearing on his character. His parents' marriage lasted only a brief period. His father, Abdullah, was the youngest of Abd Al-Muttalib's 10 sons.

He was to be sacrificed in fulfillment of a pledge Abd Al-Muttalib had made long before his birth. However, he was ransomed for an offering of 100 camels. When this was done, he got married, but stayed only a brief period with his wife, Aminah, before joining a trade trip to Syria. On the way back he died.

Aminah herself died when Muhammad was six years of age, and Abd Al-Muttalib followed her two years later. Thus, Muhammad was deprived of both parents and grandfather by the time he was eight years old. Thus he experienced being an orphan, cared for by relatives who were kind, particularly his uncle Abu Talib who treated him as his own son.

What all this meant was that Muhammad was a young boy of noble descent in a society that attached much importance to family, tribal lineage and loyalty. However, he was of limited means. As we see later in his life, this was the spur for him to endeavor to be independent from an early age. He was nevertheless brought up by kind people: his wet nurse, mother, grandfather, as well as his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Fatimah. He also experienced life in the desert when he was with his wet nurse. Most hard was his loss of his mother when he was traveling with her in the desert. Then as a teenager he worked as a shepherd, tending sheep.

Then as a young man, he traveled with a trade caravan to Syria, working as agent for his future wife, Khadijah. We learn that he was exemplary in his attending to his work, faithful to his trust, with a keen eye to ensure that his mission was profitable for his employer, useful to him. Thus he combined noble descent with good upbringing, a serious approach to life with honesty and faithfulness to trust, and varied life experience with high moral values. We also learn that he never engaged in loose pleasures, as young men often do in all types of society.

We have various reports speaking of events that accompanied his birth, which people read as indicating his future role as God's messenger. These reports cannot be confirmed. We do not, however, attach much importance to them because they were not clear enough to those who might have witnessed them so as to understand their significance. It is true that Muhammad's birth signaled the end of confused ideas about God, and the establishment of the true faith that would remain available to mankind for the rest of human life. Yet this was not indicated by some miraculous events accompanying his birth. It was made clear in the divine revelations he was to receive forty years later, when the angel Gabriel told him that he was God's choice to be His last messenger to mankind.

When we look at the situation of mankind at the time, we recognize that the world was in great need for a message from God to set its life on the right course. And when we look at Muhammad's early years, we realize that his difficult childhood was part of his preparation for his future role. He was the one most suited to deliver God's message, and his preparation for that task was a continuous process that was soon to yield its fruits.

KENYA: ICC PROSECUTOR NAMES 20 PEOPLE MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR POST-ELECTION CLASHES

KENYA: ICC PROSECUTOR NAMES 20 PEOPLE MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR POST-ELECTION CLASHES

Following a request for additional information from the International Criminal Court (ICC) earlier this month, its Prosecutor today named the 20 people he says are most responsible for the deadly post-election ethnic violence which swept Kenya in December 2007 and January 2008.

Last November, Luis Moreno-Ocampo sought authorization from the Court's pre-trial chamber to open an investigation into the ethnic violence that erupted following the disputed polls in which President Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity (PNU) was declared the winner over opposition leader Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), now the Prime Minister.

Some 1,000 people were killed in the clashes, which forced over 300,000 others to flee their homes.

Mr. Moreno-Ocampo said today that senior political and business leaders associated with the two parties organized, enticed and/or financed attacks against civilians on account of their perceived ethnic and/or political affiliation pursuant to or on furtherance of a State and/or organization party.

"These senior leaders from both PNU and ODM parties were guided by political objectives to retain or gain power," he noted.

"They utilized their personal, government, business and tribal network to commit the crimes," Mr. Moreno-Ocampo said, adding that Government officials, Parliament members, the police and youth gangs were among those who helped them implement their policies.

The list of the 20 people who the Prosecutor, who met with both Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga late last year, believes bear the gravest responsibility is sealed.

The names were identified after several inquiries were conducted, and former Secretary-General Kofi Annan submitted sealed materials about possible crimes to Mr. Moreno-Ocampo in early 2009.

"At this stage, the names are indicative only," the Prosecutor stressed. "The allegations concerning the named individuals will have to be measured against the evidence gathered independently by my office."

On 19 February, judges from the ICC's pre-trial chamber asked him for extra information on the incidents likely to be the focus of an investigation, the groups of people likely to be scrutinized, and any investigations being carried out domestically with regard to potential cases.

They also requested clarification on the linkages between the events, people and acts of violence allegedly committed in Kenya on the one hand, and the policies of a State and organizations, on the other.

"If the Judges authorize the investigation, I will engage those who wish to clarify their role or to provide further information," said Mr. Moreno-Ocampo, who reminded the pre-trial chamber today that none of the 20 people he named have faced justice in Kenya for the crimes.

Under the ICC's complementarity principle, it can only intervene if there are no national proceedings against those responsible for the crimes.

The Prosecutor also appealed for an expedited decision on whether the ICC will proceed with an investigation, underscoring that both the victims and those defined as suspects need justice.

The Hague-based ICC is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Currently, four situations are under investigation by the prosecutor: the Darfur region of Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and the Central African Republic (CAR).

AFRICA: Tracking the male circumcision rollout

AFRICA: Tracking the male circumcision rollout

NAIROBI, 2 March 2010 (PLUSNEWS) - Medical male circumcision is now widely recognized as an important HIV prevention tool, and several African countries have included it in their national HIV strategies.

IRIN/PlusNews lists the progress of 13 nations in eastern and southern Africa identified as priority countries for male circumcision scale-up by the UN World Health Organization.

Kenya: An estimated 85 percent of men are circumcised, but just 40 percent of those in Nyanza province, which has the country's highest prevalence, have had the procedure. In 2008 the government launched a national campaign and by the end of 2009 more than 90,000 men had been circumcised, 40,000 of them during a two-month "rapid results" initiative in Nyanza.

The government aims to have all uncircumcised men - an estimated 1.1 million http://www.plusnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=87074 - undergo the procedure by 2013. Kenya is the only African country to have successfully rolled out male circumcision on such a large scale.

Zambia: Male circumcision prevalence is 13 percent, and Zambia aims to circumcise about 250,000 men every year. More than 16,000 men were circumcised at 11 sites in 2009, and the goal is to have 300 sites offering the services by 2014.

Swaziland: The Ministry of Health and Human Services plans to provide circumcision to 80 percent of men aged 15 to 24 by the end of 2014 http://www.plusnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=86444. Just eight percent of Swazi men are circumcised. The country - which has the world's highest HIV prevalence - developed a male circumcision strategy in 2008; by the end of 2009 more than 5,000 men had undergone the surgery.

Botswana: Five centres of excellence have been identified to scale-up circumcision services, and Botswana's Ministry of Health aims to reach at least 460,000 HIV negative men and boys below the age of 49 by 2012. More than 4,300 men have been circumcised since April 2009.

Zimbabwe: In April 2009 the pilot phase of service delivery began, during which 1,818 men were circumcised at four sites. A national male circumcision policy was launched in November 2009.

Rwanda: Since 2008 the government has been rolling out male circumcision in the army, where prevalence is 4.5 percent compared to a national rate of three percent. A recent study http://www.plosmedicine.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pmed.1000211 suggested that Rwanda should also be scaling up circumcision across a broad range of age groups, especially the very young, where the procedure was found to be highly cost-effective.

South Africa: The government has been criticized for moving too slowly http://www.plusnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=87315 in developing a national circumcision strategy. By December 2009 the country had a draft policy but no mechanisms for training, quality assurance, or monitoring and evaluation.
South Africa has the world's largest HIV-positive population.

About 35 percent of men are circumcised. Data from the only site currently providing free circumcision - Orange Farm, near Johannesburg - reveals that 14,253 men were circumcised in 2009.

Namibia: A draft policy was submitted to parliament and training of surgical health professionals is underway. Five circumcision pilot sites have been identified, two of which are in operation. A 2009 field analysis http://www.malecircumcision.org/programs/documents/Namibia11209.pdf showed that the unit cost per procedure was very high: US$88 for adults and $72 for newborns.

Lesotho: About 4,000 men are circumcised annually at government and private clinics. A policy has been approved but is yet to be launched, and formal scale-up has not yet started. The Puisano Outreach Organization, a local NGO, is engaged in male circumcision campaigns throughout the country.

Tanzania: A 2009 situation analysis http://www.malecircumcision.org/programs/documents/TanzaniaMaleCircumcisionSituationAnalysis_September_09.pdf found male circumcision was accepted, even among traditionally non-circumcising communities, and 70 percent of Tanzanian men were circumcised. A national policy is being developed and three demonstration sites have been set up.

Mozambique: No formal policy for male circumcision has been developed, but an existing operational plan for HIV prevention includes circumcision. Five pilot sites have been selected for scale-up in 2010.

A 2008 study found that rolling out adult male circumcision in Mozambique would put undue pressure on health workers, which would limit the scale and effectiveness of the programme.

Malawi: The country is conducting data analysis to inform its male circumcision strategy. A local NGO, Banja la Mtsogolo, http://www.banja.org.mw is providing male circumcision services in its clinics, where it has 19 trained clinicians performing the procedure.

Uganda: This is one of the three countries where studies showed the link between male circumcision and HIV, but only 25 percent of men are circumcised and HIV prevalence is rising. There has been some criticism for failing to start male circumcision quickly enough - the country still has no policy, nor has it started service delivery.

A 2009 situational analysis http://www.malecircumcision.org/programs/documents/MC_situation_analysis_Uganda_full.pdf found that most practitioners would need additional training to perform male circumcision.

SOMALIA: Hujale Jama, "I never thought I would depend on anyone but look at me now"

SOMALIA: Hujale Jama, "I never thought I would depend on anyone but look at me now"

BOSASSO, 2 March 2010 (IRIN) - Prolonged and persistent droughts have drastically changed the fortunes of Hujale Jama, 80. Originally from the village of Has Wanaje, 480km east of Bosasso, commercial capital of the self-declared autonomous state of Puntland, Jama was once considered fairly well-off. Then the drought slowly decimated his livestock. Today, he lives with relatives in Bosasso, without any livestock to his name.

Jama is one of thousands of people in Bosaso displaced by drought who have moved to urban centres where they depend on relatives. He spoke to IRIN in Bosasso:

"Three years ago I had 600 heads of goats and sheep and more than 30 camels. I was a man of means and would be asked to help those with less. I was one of the leaders of my community and never needed help, I was the one helping.

"Nowadays, I am the one asking people for help. I have seen many people lose all their animals but I never thought I would be one of them. It is not what I expected to be doing at my age. My livestock died one by one until there was nothing left.

"Unfortunately I am not the only one suffering. Many people in this town were once herders but have since lost everything. The droughts are becoming longer and more devastating. When there was no pasture or water in our area we would move to another part of the country but all areas are now the same; no pasture no water.

"If the situation continues like this, there will be no more people left in the countryside. The young ones can adjust and maybe find something to do but what is there for an old man like me? We are almost invisible; nobody is talking about rural people who are destitute.

"Today I am sick but I don't have the money to go to the doctor. I never thought I would depend on anyone but look at me now. I used to be a respected man but I don't feel like a man.

"What will I do? I cannot beg at my age."

Hella number: scientists call for new word for 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Scientists are lobbying for a new word to help them describe numbers larger than 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, amid concerns that the current system of units is insufficient.

A campaign for "hella" to join the likes of "kilo", "mega" and "giga" as an internationally accepted prefix is attracting growing support.

More than 20,000 scientists, students and members of the public have signed an online petition backing the new quantity, which would be used for figures with 27 zeros after the first digit.

Currently the highest prefix allowed by the International System of Units (SI) is the "yotta", for 24 zeroes.

Austin Sendek, the physics student at the University of California who started the campaign, said that recent scientific developments required that the scales of measurement be extended.

"The analysis of many physical phenomena reveals natural quantities in excess of 27 orders of magnitude, a number which is currently ignored by the SI system," he wrote on the Facebook petitionoutlining the case for the hella.

"Designating a prefix for 10^27 is of critical importance for scientists in all fields. This number is significant in many crucial calculations, including the wattage of the sun, distances between galaxies, or the number of atoms in a large sample."

The amount of energy released by the Sun would be more elegantly expressed as 0.3 hellawatts than as 300 yottawatts, he added.

Hella is North Californian slang for "very" or "a lot of". Mr Sendek and his supporters argue that its adoption would be a fitting honour for the state's impressive record of scientific research.

If the change is approved, the hella would be the first new SI prefix introduced since 1991, when the International Committee for Weights and Measures approved yotta and zetta (21 zeroes).

Mr Sendek has already contacted the British chemist who heads the Consultative Committee for Units (CCU), the body which advises the international committee, in the hope of building support.

Professor Ian Mills of the University of Reading has promised to raise the petition at the next meeting of the CCU but said it was unlikely that the hella would win approval.

He said: "The general feeling has always been that it would not be sensible to recommend extensions to the prefixes that would be rarely used, because users would not remember them and would not recognise their meaning when they see them."

In a letter to Mr Sendek he added: "I will mention this exchange at our next CCU meeting, and I am sure it will be received with smiles - but I doubt that it will go further!"

Prof Mills suggested that a simpler option would be for the committee to relax rules banning compound prefixes, so that, for instance, a hella could be expressed as a kiloyotta.

Karadzic calls war 'just and holy'

Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader, has told judges presiding over his genocide trial that the Bosnian wars during the 1990s were "just and holy".

Karadzic addressed the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague on Monday, ending his months-long boycott of the proceedings.

He told that court that the Bosnian Serbs had defended themselves against Islamic fundamentalists who had started the war in Bosnia to lay claim to the entire country.

"I will defend that nation of ours and their cause that is just and holy. We have a good case. We have good evidence and proof," he said.

'Reluctant' Serbs

Karadzic, dressed in a dark suit and tie, traced the origins of the 1992-95 war to the rejection by Bosnia's Muslim leadership of any power-sharing proposal.

In depth

He argued that conflicts resulting from the break-up of Yugoslavia were a natural consequence of the struggle for land.

Barnaby Phillips, Al Jazeera's correspondent in The Hague, said that Karadzic had appeared as "unapologetic, proud, at times even veering to sarcasm".

"Overall the tone of Mr Karadzic is proud, defiant, what he's saying is that there was certainly no plot on the part of the Bosnian Serbs to exterminate the Muslim, or Croat community," said Phillips.

"Certainly not to ethnically cleanse them out of any part of Bosnia.

"Rather the Serbs very reluctantly acquiesced in Bosnia's secession from Serbia, from Yugoslavia at that time, they didn't want that secession to happen.

"And even then it was Muslim desire for domination in Bosnia, and the nefarious interference of Western powers, perhaps in particular Germany, which took Bosnia into civil war, and not the acts of the Serbs themselves.

"It's an interesting defence, and it's a defence which I think will surprise many people in Western Europe and indeed in the Muslim world."

'Greater Serbia'

Addressing the court, Karadzic said: "I stand here before you not to defend the mere mortal that I am, but to defend the greatness of a small nation in Bosnia Herzegovina.

"Which for 500 years has had to suffer and has demonstrated a great deal of modesty and perseverance to survive in freedom."

The wartime Bosnian Serb leader is accused of having colluded with Slobodan Milosevic, the late Yugoslav leader, with the aim of creating a "Greater Serbia" that was to include 60 per cent of Bosnian territory.

Karadzic stands charged as the "supreme commander" of an ethnic cleansing campaign of Croats and Muslims in the Bosnian war in which 100,000 people were killed and 2.2 million displaced.

He is facing 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, but though he denies any wrongdoing, he has refused to enter a formal plea.

Among the charges against Karadzic are the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of more than 7,000 captured Muslim men and boys, and the 44-month siege of the capital Sarajevo that ended in November 1995, leaving about 10,000 people dead.

Hasan Nuhanovic, a survivor of the Srebrenica massacre who lost his parents and brother there, spoke to Al Jazeera from Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital.

Nuhanovic said: "Radovan Karadzic is being tried in The Hague, it's very important.

"But, it's even more important, in my opinion, that the shooters, the people who killed my family, who still live in my neighbourhood, not really far from where I live, they are still free. And they have not been prosecuted.

"So while their leader is being tried in The Hague, I expect the authorities of this country to try the war criminals who still live here in our neighbourhood, that's very important as well for this community."

Trial boycott

Karadzic had refused to attend the opening of his trial last October, insisting on more time to prepare his case and causing a four-month delay.

Al Jazeera's Erica Wood reports on Karadzic's numerous efforts to delay his trial

He had sought a new delay of the trial until June 17 after his two-day opening statement concludes on Tuesday, to study an additional 400,000 pages of prosecution evidence he claims have been filed since October.

His request was refused by the court which ruled last Friday that the first prosecution witness, whose identity is being withheld, will testify on Wednesday.

Under these circumstances, Karadzic was likely to resume his boycott, said Marko Sladojevic, his legal adviser.

In November, the court appointed Richard Harvey, a British lawyer, to take over the defence if Karadzic opted to continue his boycott of the court.

Nato manhunt

First indicted in 1995, Karadzic eluded a Nato manhunt for more than a decade before being caught in July 2008 in Belgrade, where he had been living as a new-age philosopher.

Karadzic faces possible life imprisonment if convicted in what is one of the last and largest cases brought to the UN war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

The UN Security Council, which set up the tribunal in 1993, has ordered it not to open new cases.

The tribunal has indicted 161 political and military officials, of which 40 cases are still continuing.

Two fugitives, Karadzic's former top general, Ratko Mladic, and Croatian Serb leader Goran Hadzic, could still be brought to trial at The Hague.

Karadzic is scheduled to return to the courtroom on Tuesday to present the rest of his opening statement.
